About the Plants

The planted hearts have a selection of sempervivum (hens-and-chicks!) and small sedum. All of the plants we use are hardy to at least zone 5. You can leave them in the garden all winter and enjoy them year after year.

The semps will send off small plants or chicks which you can leave in the heart or transplant to another container. They can also go right into the garden but we think they are better appreciated in containers.

Occasionally the semps will flower. It's not a regular occurence and it is impossible to predict if or when it will happen. The hen (mother plant) will send up a tall flower which is interesting if not exactly beautiful. After flowering the hen will die but by that time you'll have lots of chicks to take it's place.

The sedums look best if trimmed regularly. This keeps them from getting lanky and from spreading out of the planter. They root easily if you want to transplant cuttings.
